So as some of you may know, I finally finished my exams!! Honestly it's such a relief to know I'm finally done with college, along with exams in general. I despise exams - yet I was intending to go to university next year with exams involved ekk... Deferring a year was the right decision to take a break though... Anyways, shout out to everyone who has completed exams, well done to you guys and good luck with your results, and to those who are still going with exams, you can do it guys! Work hard!

If I'm perfectly honest, since I spent the past month trying to revise the same subject (English Language... I cry...) it meant that I was restricted from going out and about to enjoy myself. The rare times I went out, it wasn't very far and most of the times it was to go out and revise with a friend... Thankfully, as exams have finished I have begun to go out more again (yet my bank account can't keep up RIP). This led to my 3-day food excursion which I shall present to you guys soon enough!

As a major food fanatic, I literally have a list of places I've been meaning to go and eat, and slowly I am ticking them off one by one. So now it's time for you guys to check out my food visits, I hope you guys also have a chance to check them out too!

DAY 1 - Wednesday 15th June 2016

So I just finished my exam along with my friend, Julia (literal babe - check out her blog here) aha and after discussing our exam with our other class members (bad idea guys, so much regret) we went off to Kingston to eat. We'd been meaning to meet up to eat up at this Japanese place for ages, yet our plans always seem to fall short because of schedule clashes. However, we finally managed to go to the restaurant, and there are literally no regrets.

We went to Mino restaurant located in Kingston, not far from Kingston College (main building). The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. As you walk into the building you can see the restaurant decorated in blossom trees, fans and lanterns inspired by the Japanese culture.

I literally love the aesthetic of this place so much 😍

We were sat down and began looking through the lunch menu before proceeding to ask for the main menu for more choice. In the end we chose our dishes, Julia chose the Chicken Gyoza, Salmon Avocado Maki and Chicken Ramen, whilst I chose the Iku Mayo and Chicken Donburi.

Post-exam celebration with @juliaattenborough - so glad exams are over, now to enjoy the holiday 😛

The restaurant reminded me of a similar Japanese restaurant called Sapporo Season (located in Hampton Hill) which incorporates a similar aesthetic and costs about roughly the same price. I spent just over £10 for what I ordered and Julia around £20. The portions were quite big which surprised me, with Julia who considered ordering an extra dish originally. We found that the food was quite filling so even if you had one main meal you would be quite full which would cost less than £10.

After we paid the bill, we even received some sweets which was really sweet of them. I appreciated the service and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant was really soothing as well.

DAY 2 - Thursday 16th June 2016

I set off for Central London to meet my dear friend, Nazihah (my foodie friend) for another food outing. I wanted to meet her just before she left for Brunei for the entirety of summer! I'm not going to lie... I totally came late... As per usual oh dear..

First stop, Misato! If you're looking for a cheap Japanese place to eat in Central London, Misato is the way to go! Back when I was still in secondary school, I would go to Misato to go and eat out just because I was a poor student with no income whatsoever... The place isn't amazingly big, but the price and portions for a place in Central London is great. You have a 10% service charge, but the price of one meal (which may I say is a big portion) is usually under £10. The restaurant is usually quite busy so there was a queue however we didn't have to wait too long for us to be seated especially as there was only 2 of us.

We decided upon Soba dishes, which were about £5-£6 each. Nazihah got the Zaru Soba whilst I chose the Beef Soba.

After our meal at Misato, we moved onto the main reason we decided to meet up! Our trip to Pan De Vie located in Covent Garden. For the both of us, we had both been meaning to visit this French-Asian bakery. The bakery provides mainly Matcha products - unfortunately both of us aren't particular fans of Matcha so we decided on cheesecakes instead. Nazihah decided the Yuzu Cheesecake and I decided on the Strawberry Cheesecake.

Overall, I found that my choice for dessert was good for my taste. I don't have a major sweet tooth when it comes to desserts so it had enough sweetness that wasn't too overpowering. I'm also a big fan of strawberries so they went well together. I was also worried that my cheesecake would fall apart but it stayed together quite well, although Nazihah's Yuzu Cheesecake started falling apart as she started going through her dessert despite how carefully she was trying to eat it.

Finally got to try out this French-Asian bakery 💕 We got the Yuzu Cheesecake and Strawberry Cheesecake 🍓

The workers at Pan De Vie were really sweet, they even offered us a chance to sign up for a free points card. This gave us the chance to earn points whilst spending. You receive 1 point for every £1 you spend. I'm hoping when I come again, I'll try one Matcha product at least once.

Other than Asian grocery shopping, we managed to pop back to Chinatown and I got myself some bubble tea. Since I didn't have a chance to go to Central London for a while, it was good to finally treat myself to some bubble tea. One of my personal favourites is the Mango QQ bubble tea from Chatime. I tend to ask for normal sugar, ice levels etc.

DAY 3 - Friday 17th June 2016

The final day to eat out! So my friend, Mary and I had been planning this occasion since 2 months ago, and we were later joined by Emily on our food outing. Since both of our exams finished on the 15th and 16th of June we thought the most appropriate date would be to celebrate on the 17th. As lovers of crabs, we honestly wanted to eat crab but there weren't really good crab places which weren't charging a ridiculous amount of money so we thought we would opt for lobster - you must be thinking, isn't lobster more expensive? Surprisingly the one we got wasn't that expensive...

We decided to eat out at Burger and Lobster at the Soho branch. We found that the menu was indeed expensive, and I'm not going to lie... I felt very uneducated when it came to eating lobster as they gave us certain pieces of cutlery which confused me... But eventually I got the hang of it. We were looking around the restaurant and we could see that it was mainly adults (we are adults too but like we are very young adults aha).

In the end, we decided from the new menu. I read that originally there was some confusion with the restaurant as many people had hoped to have burger and lobster rather than opting between one or another, so they renewed the menu and incorporated meals which included the burger along with the lobster.

Mary and I decided on "The Pounder" (£19) which offered the 500G lobster along with chips, both grilled (despite Mary asking for her lobster to be steamed...) whilst Emily opted for "The Soho Combo" (£28) which incorporated the burger with lobster and fries. She also requested for an additional cheese and bacon with her meal (an additional £1).

The result? We all agreed it was difficult and a lot of effort trying to eat the lobster. We also agreed that we enjoyed the sauce which was on offer (which I believe was a mixture of butter and garlic). I wished there was more lobster meat available, considering the price. Plus, I feel like that fact Mary and I had been hoping for crab and deciding on lobster instead thinking it would have a similar taste (which it didn't) made it slightly disappointing to us - Honestly we didn't think the taste would be so different from one another, but we were proven wrong aha.

Finally got the opportunity to try Burger and Lobster ✌🏼️
A photo posted by Sophia Tang 🐼 (@sophilicity) on Jun 17, 2016 at 8:32am PDT

Apparently Burger and Lobster changed their menus because people got confused how they couldn't order burgers and lobsters together 😂 but so expensive 😭
A photo posted by Sophia Tang 🐼 (@sophilicity) on Jun 17, 2016 at 11:24am PDT

Note: Please reminded that there is a discretionary 20% service charge. I enjoyed the lobster but I would still favour crab to lobster if I were given the choice. The chips and sauce were good, but considering the restaurant is called "Burger and Lobster" this isn't exactly the restaurant's specialty aha. The experience was interesting though, and it was great being able to catch up with friends that I hadn't seen for a long time.

Overall thank you for reading my food adventures, I hope to bring you more food posts soon!

So I thought I would come back to my blog with another one of my days in London! Not so much an event but I went to a lot of different food places that I'd been meaning to try so I thought I would write about it! I can also say I completed one of my bucket list items which I'm really happy about!

Thus I began the day in Leicester Square waiting for my friend, Viet-Anh to arrive. I happened to be sitting by the square overseeing a street act which is rather common throughout London. At first I was pretty uninterested but after overseeing the act I was very confused. The man attempted to get a string-less tennis racket from head to his toes going over his torso and so on... He managed but it was a very weird act...

Once he arrived, as we met in Piccadilly Circus to proceed to Whaam Banh Mi located in Soho. Whaam Banh Mi is a Vietnamese restaurant which is also the location for the ice cream macaron sandwich pop up shop. Yolkin is a small pop up shop, a one woman business selling ice cream macaron sandwiches.

Sammie, Yolkin's owner, decided to call her business based on the idea that if she hadn't looked for a recipe with "yolks in" she would have never considered the idea of making macaron ice cream sandwiches.

The pop up store is located inside Whaam Banh Mi at 40, Great Windmill Street Soho. Her business hours are from 12PM - 4PM on Saturdays and Sundays. However, the macaron ice cream sandwiches have sold out beforehand, as early as 2PM!

So I'd been meaning to actually try one of Yolkin's macaron ice cream sandwiches for a long time, that it was even on my bucket list! The flavours change every week, with new flavours being posted on Tuesday weekly! For that particular weekend, there was Snickers, Melon, Skittles and Milo as the chosen flavours for the week.

Sammie, the owner always updates Yolkin's social media so do feel free to like, follow and share to find out the latest news on Yolkin's products, particularly new flavours and her making process! Click the links below to check them out:

But don't forget to also check out their website for contact details and more!

Yolkin's Website

Anyways! So for that weekend, I opted on the Skittles flavoured macaron ice cream sandwich, whilst my friend opted on the Snickers options. Honestly, I'm really happy about the product, the ice cream was sweet but not to sweet (I don't particularly have a sweet tooth). As I began to eat the ice cream there wasn't any skittles at the moment but the more I ate, eventually the skittles came up in the ice cream. My ice cream was softer in comparison to my friends, which made it easier for me to eat. Yolkin provide small spoons for you to eat the ice cream but it was difficult trying to work out how to eat the actual macaron itself. I chose to eat the ice cream first before the outside of the macaron...

It is a worthwhile dessert to try though! I think it's a place you should try at least one's but look out for flavours as you might be amazed at what comes up! For one, I hope that the pocky flavour comes back as I missed out on that weekend when they were being sold! Fortunately, flavours do return so don't think that you missed out if you couldn't go on a particular weekend.

Moving on, we began walking towards Covent Garden. If you know me, you'll know how incredibly indecisive I am. I was given a time limit from when I arrived at Leicester Square till when my friend arrived to decide on picking where to eat for lunch. Trust me, I struggled, I didn't actually decide for a while... Fortunately, with the help of my friend, Katrina (thank you babe) I managed to decide on Shake Shack.

Shake Shack is an American fast food restaurant located in 4 places only in the UK: Covent Garden, New Oxford Street, Stratford in London and St David's Dewi Sant in Cardiff. I'd heard about this restaurant from a few people here and there but thought it would be worth trying for a lunchtime meal. If I'm honest, I wasn't too sure on what to pick. They offer burgers, hot dogs, crinkle cut fries and more.

I finally decided on a shake burger which is a typical cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce. I decided on the single without the tomato but found it was pretty small and wish I had ordered a double. My friend ordered a Shack Stack a cheeseburger with a 'shroom burger topped with lettuce, tomato and ShakeSauce. I didn't even know what a shroom burger was myself... The 'Shroom burger is crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with melted cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato and ShakeSauce. From my friend, I heard that quite a lot of people particularly like the portobello mushroom although I'm not sure why myself... Finally, we ordered cheese fries, which are crinkle cut fries topped with cheddar cheese sauce. I particularly liked these the best and had heard a lot of people order them when they went to Shake Shack. The cheedar cheese sauce accompanied the fries really well so I'm glad I asked for the cheese sauce on top.

After we finished eating, we were aiming to get our steel wool photography done however it wasn't dark enough yet for the process to be effective. So in the meantime we decided to kill some time at Las Vegas Arcade in Soho playing on some dance machine games such as ITG (In The Groove) and PIU (Pump It Up). Trust me, it was exhausting, I am totally unfit aha... Need to get back into these games and improve again oh dear...

As it had gotten dark enough, we decided to proceed on trying out the steel wool photography. The only problem was trying to find a suitable location to complete the photography. In the end we decided to travel to South Bank and complete our photography by the beach area by the bridge. Both of us are the kind of people who don't like to draw attention to ourselves so it was interesting trying to try this out since we knew people would be overlooking us trying out the steel wool photography.

You might be wondering, why would this attract so much attention? Well the steel wool photography involves steel wool (well if it wasn't obvious already...), a whisk (yes... don't question it just yet...), a rope and a lighter, making sure we set up the camera on a tripod at a shutter speed of 20 seconds.

Here's a link of how it works:
Steel Wool Photography Tutorial

For those who didn't have time to watch the video. The basic concept is you attach the rope to the whisk. Fill the whisk with a reasonable amount of steel wool. Then lit near the bottom of the whisk where there is steel wool then begin to swing the rope with the whisk attached and keep doing it till the steel wool stops burning etc. It is best to do it in an open space avoiding grass unless it is wet. The open space should be away from the public as the sparks can reach quite a large distance and we want to avoid having sparks hit the public. I was also told to wear a hoodie so wear long sleeves underneath is also a good idea and people with long hair should tie their hair back and put their hood up to avoid your hair being burned...

Now you may be wondering what it looks like in action. Coincidentally, my friend's friend oversaw us in practice not realising that it was her friend completing the steel wool photography. Thanks for the snapchat video! Here it is in action:

We did various attempts with the steel wool photography and had a lot of interesting comments, and quite a few spectators too. Fortunately it was dark and being the awkward person I am when I actually swung the whisk around with the rope once we lit the steel wool on fire I turned my body away from the public... Unintentionally...

These were the results (my friend and I took it in turns to complete the steel wool photography so we got some interesting results):

I think our attempts turned out pretty well, especially as it was my first time trying it out aha! Definitely going to try it again when I can!

After our steel wool photography, we decided to return to Soho to have dinner. We had used so much energy trying to do the steel wool photography aha. I think my arm was aching for days afterwards. We decided to have some Japanese food at Eat Tokyo in Soho. I've heard about this place through a lot of friends and have eaten at quite a few of Japanese places such as Taro and Dozo which are on the same road and next to each other. Ironic really aha. For some reason, the wait was incredibly long, I think we waited for at least 30 minutes before we managed to get a seat. It was really busy.

Once we were seated down, we started ordering our dishes. Thus my indecisive instinct comes in... Again... My friend opted on a salmon sashimi bento (?) I'm not too sure what it was called, but it salmon sashimi pieces on top of rice. We also ordered a sushi dish which I really liked called the Alaskan roll (?). It had prawn tempura, tobiko (flying fish roe), salmon and rice... My memory isn't very good... Apologies oops. I also ordered a dish which is pretty much Katsu don. However, I didn't realise how much I would get if I ordered the full one, I regret not ordering the half one, which would have filled me, I only managed to finish half of this. I also found it was quite salty in comparison to the one I had at Taro. I was happy that both our dishes had accompanying miso soup. Miso soup usually consists of tofu, wakame (edible seaweed) and scallion (spring onion).

Overall, I had a really great day, but it was incredibly exhausting aha. I got to try out quite a variety of food I hadn't done before which is what I usually aim to do when I go out to gain new experiences of what is good and what is not.

Thank you for reading my latest blog update, and hopefully I'll be back soon to update you on another event!

I've finally caught up with all my birthday posts, although I didn't manage to include them all last month... I can't believe it's already December, knowing that Christmas is approaching (despite actually celebrating Christmas) I can feel the festive spirit around with everyone's Christmas jumpers, socks and of course, the Christmas songs.

The funniest thing about this celebration was the fact we decided to celebrate my cousin, Jenny's birthday the day before her actual birthday, so she wasn't actually 18 yet, so she couldn't legally drink or anything - although I agree, drinking isn't necessary when you turn 18... I didn't even drink myself.

It was so hard trying to get a group picture of everyone since no one ever seemed to be ready - I have such a bitchy face, please excuse me. Let's just say our selfie attempts with a selfie stick weren't too great... From shaky pictures to cutting out quite a few people's heads.. Opps. Flash makes us look very pale, that's all I've got to say, but the flash picture includes more of us for sure! Forever not being able to see Duy though... Who was supposedly on the left at the far end...

For Jenny's dinner venue choice, she selected Thai Square, the Covent Garden branch. It was pretty convenient for everyone to get to. I was a bit worried since Thai food means spicy food... However I was fortunate to be able to find something on the menu which are suited my preferences. But as I said previously, I'm one to check the menu online before I go to a restaurant to make my life a whole lot easier - Welcome to the forever indecisive Sophia...

Here you can have a look at the online food and drink menus:
Thai Square Covent Garden Food Menu
Thai Square Covent Garden Drinks Menu

Majority of us selected the Pad Thai, which was the one I selected. It wasn't at all spicy, my cousin, Tracey warned me that it may be very sweet but the taste was just right. I chose the Pad Thai with king prawns. However there are variations to this course, you can opt between king prawns and jumbo prawns. There is even a vegetarian option available which Jenny got. The Pad Thai, as quoted is a "popular Thai noodle dish of Chanburi rice noodles, stir fried  with prawns, crushed peanuts, bean curd, bean sprouts and egg". Meanwhile, the vegetarian Pad Thai, as quoted is "stir-fried Chanburi rice noodles with Pad Thai sauce, bean curds, bean sprouts, spring onions and crushed peanuts".

Meanwhile my cousins, Tracey and Helen opted upon the curries. Helen chose the Massaman Curry whilst Tracey chose the Panang Curry. The Massaman Curry, as quoted is a "traditional Muslim inspired style of cooking from the south of Thailand, tender meat cooked in rich coconut milk and Massaman curry paste with carrots, onions and potatoes, very mild" - You can choose between the chicken and lamb as the tender meat included in the curry. Meanwhile, the Panang Curry, as quoted is a curry which has "a rich taste spicy and relatively dry. Panang curry paste cooked with coconut milk and choice of prawns, beef or chicken, garnished with shredded lime leaves".

Meanwhile Khang and Adam had much more interesting dishes... So interesting that my mind has actually gone blank on what they got for dinner... Opps! All I know for sure is Khang ordered the Chicken Satay as a starter as he was the only one to order a starter with a main dish. However, looking from the menu, he seemed to have ordered the Bangkok Lamb if I am not wrong... But don't hold me to this because I may be wrong aha. I can't forget, Duy who got the Thai Square Fried Rice. Once again quoted from the menu is "traditional fried, sautéed with egg, spring onions, tomatoes and vegetables". I was contemplating whether to get this dish or the Pad Thai originally but ended up getting the Pad Thai which I have no regrets doing so.

I think one of the conversations that came up during the dinner, was knowing which type of curry is spicier, red curry or green curry, and honestly I found out something new myself. Since Tracey works at a Thai restaurant herself, she was recommending us all dishes, and I found that the green curry is spicier than the red curry despite the fact you usually associate that red spice is spicier e.g. red chillies... Or what I thought anyways...

Anyways, moving on to the gift giving, Jenny went through different gifts that she received from a Mac lipstick that she had wanted, a jacket, a wine glass to represent her 18th birthday, birthday cakes, jewellery, lush and of course from me, a monkey toy - I think my present was the best not gonna lie... I joke aha.

Once again, we managed to end up getting two cakes aha. Jenny received a cake from me and Tracey but also from her and Kylie's mum. Each to their own, both creams were Asian creations, with cream but one was pink whilst one was blue with a cute animal decorated on top.

Then of course, we wanted to save one of the cakes, so it was deciding which cake to cut. We ended up cutting the bigger cake, which was the pink cake, we each received a piece, cut by Helen and Adam - teamwork was on pointe! After we each had grabbed a piece, we divided the rest of the cake into takeaway boxes to take home, we ended up with 9 boxes, despite there being only 7 people attending. We each took one box to take back to our families whilst the remaining two went to the staff of the restaurant who gave us a great service throughout the whole occasion.

And of course, who would end the celebration without taking a selfie with the birthday girl aha. I thought I would get a selfie with Jenny with the gift I gave her - she's still contemplating what to call her monkey I'm sure!

Thank you Jenny for hosting a great birthday celebration! Especially trying to keep our family still connected, it's a worthwhile experience. To my readers, thank you again for reading another one of my birthday posts, I hope to keep you updated with the latest events whilst I can, although it's going be a busy month as Christmas is drawing closer.
