Chapter 1: Stereotypes: Introduction

What I've learnt over the years is that being Asian, an ethnic minority in Britain makes it rather impossible to escape stereotypes. Whether it was when I was growing up and studying in the UK, to the natural stereotypes which occurred between friends. I found that somewhere and somehow, stereotypes were also a basis of a lot of assumptions.

In the upcoming chapter, I have decided to split it into parts. This will make it easier to talk about my experiences in different circumstances without overloading you with lots of information. The stereotypes include the likes of occurrences at school but also at home. I will also be discussing the consequences of these stereotypes as well as the solutions I found in attempts to overcome them.

Honestly, it hasn't exactly always been the easiest for me when it comes to growing up. I decided upon taking a non-stereotypical Asian subject for one, which had very interesting responses when it came to family, as well as additionally opting for a gap year instead of going straight to university. Furthermore, in school, I found that people made a lot of assumptions in reference to where I'm from and my culture - Thus I've had some VERY interesting questions thrown at me because of it.

But for now, I won't say too much and leave it for the chapters to unfold themselves, for you to read about some of my personal experiences. I hope that some of you will be able to gather some insightful knowledge relating to my experiences, or possibly even share your own similar experiences regarding the stereotypes you've faced growing up.
