Sophilicity

A couple of a weeks ago, was the Hyper Japan event at O2 arena. There's been quite a few different venues, originally when I first started going to Hyper Japan the event was held at Earl's Court, the Christmas event last year was held at Kensington Olympia and this year for the summer even it was held at the O2. How do I feel about the change in venues? My preference actually goes to Earl's Court, the travel is more convenient for me, but also I felt like there was much more content to it even though the size of the O2 is much bigger. For this event, I went on Friday and Sunday: Friday with my boyfriend and Sunday with my family and friends.

The one thing, I personally enjoyed about the O2 had to be the concert area where all the famous acts performed. This happened to be in a separate area in the O2 otherwise known as Building Six. Not only was there the HYPER Live Stage (ground floor) in Building Six, there was also the HYPER Gallery and HYPER Theatre located on the 1st floor, with the HYPER Maid Cafe on the 2nd floor. Not to mention, there was also a HYPER Matsuri Garden located in the Terrance. The Matsuri Garden was amazing, and I was distraught that I only managed to discover it on the last day. The Matsuri Garden has a bar, seating as well as beds all the way around the garden - You were able to relax and lie down especially if you were feeling tired from walking around for so long.

Anyways, back to my favourite attraction. The HYPER Live Stage! I think the one reason why it was my favourite was because I actually got to see one of my all time favourite, Japanese singers perform live, and with a Press Pass I basically got to see her for free - It was just amazing. Eir Aoi, she is incredible live, and her little talks after each performance with her "Engrish" and Japanese (which we pretended to understand...) were really sweet.

There were other performers as well such as ONE NOT'E who are currently rising stars of Japanese Rock. I've managed to see them before in previous conventions but I was too shy to approach them. They seem really cool people, and I've recently checked out their channel as well for their music, and honestly I think I may be replaying a few of their songs for a while aha.

Back to Eir Aoi, I know her well for her songs from Sword Art Online, but she has done songs for a few other hit animes such as Kill La Kill and Fate/Zero. I couldn't miss the opportunity to go with my boyfriend to go and get a signed CD from her. I was so nervous, I ended up just smiling and saying thank you in Japanese, whilst my boyfriend just repeated everything she said aha. We really wanted to take a picture with her but unfortunately we weren't allowed... Sigh.

Throughout the convention, as I previously stated there was different areas. There was an area for the "HYPER Game and Anime Park". There was a large exhibition for games such as In The Groove which was hosted by Heart of Gaming, there was a large section dedicated to Mario which I think was due to a celebration as we saw Mario involve through the years. There was even an opportunity to try on a few costumes and props related to Mario.

But I can't forget seeing the giant exhibit of a titan - known well for the anime, Attack on Titan or Shingeki no Kyojin. Honestly, the exhibit was huge I felt incredibly small in comparison, it really does demonstrate what a Titan would really be like if it existed. What made me laugh was the Totoro enthusiast who we happened to walk past, he seemed overjoyed to see a giant Totoro walking around. You may know Totoro from Studio Ghibli's My Neighbour Totoro.

The other section of the O2 held majority of the event. This section was near to the back of the O2. Instead this section there was the festival stage, and smaller HYPER live stage, the J-Culture showcase, HYPER Kawaii, J-Culture, the HYPER Fringe Market and Eat-Japan.

If I'm perfectly honest I spent majority of the time in the Eat-Japan section because I'm obsessed with Japanese food, specifically Takoyaki. I had it on the Friday and the Sunday of the event. Majority of us bought Takoyaki - I think I mentioned it before, but it's a well-known Japanese street food. Although this wasn't in the Eat-Japan section, I also had some milk tea as well as shaved ice from Nice Ice - managed to share some Mango shave ice hehehe.

I think the one thing that caught our eyes in this section also was how cute the plush toys were. My friend and I literally fell in love with this sheep, it was just so fluffy and cute, it was just absolutely adorable, I wish I had the money to get it but it was so expensive sigh...

There was some amazing performers also in this area, I managed to walk past this violinist at an exhibit located in the HYPER Kawaii area. She seemed really into what she was doing, and I really appreciate that in a musician - my friend I tend to be a bit critical about music since we are somewhat musicians ourselves so we have a tendency to listen to pitching and whether performers are in the right key etc.

Overall, I enjoyed the convention, but I think it's slowly becoming out of touch for me. I never really know what to get other than food if I'm perfectly honest, and this event I felt specialised more for the performance aspect referring to the HYPER Live Stage in Building Six.

I would just like to thank everyone who contributed with their pictures. Specifically again to TobiNinjaFox who continues to aid me with his photography since becoming his assistant. But also due to a minor injury which occurred on the Friday, I really appreciated all the help I got from my friends: Ernest and Damon who helped take pictures in my place. Hopefully if I can get all my editing completed I will be able to display some of the videos I captured from the Eir Aoi performance.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you look forward to my next update c:

An overdue post may I say, but this experience quite different in comparison to the other locations I visited. For one, this was a part of my "Wider Skills Week" at my college, for maths and science. Let me just say... My only real intention was to go to Thorpe Park - Don't even ask, but hey who would decline the offer to go to Thorpe Park... Yes I understand everything with Alton Towers but still. Honestly, I don't even take any sciences and I was planning to drop Maths depending on my grades...
Anyways, enough about me! What I knew about Bletchley Park revolved around my knowledge of Alan Turing from the Imitation Game (I recommend you should watch it, it's pretty interesting and you learn a lot). I think the main thing I knew about Bletchley Park was about the enigma code. Honestly, I didn't know much but it was interesting how the system worked and how the British (and probably allies) overcame the Axis' form of communication to each other through the enigma code.

If you want to find out more about the history of Bletchley Park you can check out the website here:
http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/content/hist/

So how did the actual enigma machine work?
Well I can tell you that there are different aspects of the enigma machines for example: the rotors, there are different rotor settings. There are a choice of 5 rotors, in which you choose 3 - therefore there are 60 different combinations for the rotors. As for the rotor settings there are 26 options on each rotor, therefore a total of 17,576 combinations. As well as the rotors there is also a featured plugboard with 10 leads available (aka 10 pairs of letters connected) so in total 150,738,274,937,250 combinations. And finally, how many number of different ways would you be able to set it up each day? Around 159 million million million (aka a trillion).

Right... Enough numbers, even I was sitting there in the classroom looking blankly as all these calculations were thrown to my face. Trust me, it was those times where you just nodded and pretended you understood what was going but really you were crying internally...

I realised, currently this blog posts seems incredibly intellectual so I'm just going to tone it down because even I'm struggling to process all these numbers and historical facts. So other than discussing about the enigma code, we also managed to have a tour around Bletchley Park during our free time. For lunch we walked past a really lovely lake - honestly aesthetics on pointe right there.

After lunch, we went off for our free time, and I think my aim was to visit the mansion in Bletchley Park which was where the Imitation Game was set. There was a room allocated with all of the different props and costumes used with a screen on the side featuring a video of Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Alan Turing in the Imitation Game. There were also other rooms inside the mansion including an old-fashioned library.

Afterwards we went to go and look at the "bombe" room. Honestly I would explain to you how it works but even I got confused reading it up, it's much easier to experience it in person to understand because I attempted to google it and summarise but I'm more confused than ever... Here are some images instead of the bombe aha.

Overall, it was an interesting experience, I probably learnt a lot from it, especially about the enigma code and about the history of the war in relevance to the enigma code.

Thank you for reading, I have to say this is something quite different to what I usually write about as it's not really an event more of an educational trip aha.

So for this blog, I thought instead of writing I would choose to limit the writing and instead show some of the recordings I managed to capture of the event. I hope you will enjoy!

Other than the videos, I thought I might write a little bit about the festival? Well... What can I say? The atmosphere was incredibly live, with K-pop lovers throughout the audience there was a lot of cheers from the audience and the venue itself was bigger than last year's however we were limited to what we could bring in, technically we weren't allowed DSLR's or food or drink... But I managed to film somehow (huehuehue).

Okay well to start off with, the venue was much smaller than I thought... If I compared it to conventions like MCM expo or Hyper Japan, I was pretty surprised. But then again, I didn't realise it was hosted by a student union.

Located in Holloway road, some people may have recognised a bunch of cosplayers and more queuing outside the venue which is surprisingly nearby City and Islington college. The benefit of receiving press passes allowed us to get immediate entry to the venue after 10AM or so whilst others waited outside before entering.

I think my main objective of the day was mainly to capture various cosplays which were on show as I was working alongside some friends acting as an assistant and picking up photography skills along the way.

At the event, there were a few locations to head to, from the downstairs which featured low-key lighting with a small stage for guests, with doors leading to the small gaming room (inside there was Taiko drumming along with DDR and Super Smash Bros) as well as a door leading outside where you had that strong smell of BBQ food - trust me it made me feel so hungry but the prices made me question my appetite opps. The outside was pretty spacious where some of the cosplayers went to chill and trust me, I think my favourite part of the day was hanging there and creating dance videos with the group. Check out the video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=713kSMAB2Zs

There was also the upstairs which had a much bigger stage where we had a host with two screens on the left and right which featured anime related videos. The event was originally an 18+ but recently it became more of an all ages event - you could see little kids running around aha. Anyways, also upstairs there were more stalls with the space in the hall much bigger than the downstairs. Whilst I was upstairs I managed to bump into two of the members of M.O.E otherwise known as the Maids of England. Here are Maid Nadeshiko (left) and Maid Miyuu (right).

However other than cosplayers and a few guest performances and interviews I didn't find that there was much to do, as the activities that you could do were quite limited. Before I chose to leave early, I proceeded to have a game of Taiko drumming. This is a Japanese game which involves an interactive drum, you have two types of colours in the game, and orange and a blue. For the blue coloured circles, you had to tap the edge of the drum, for the orange coloured circles you tapped the centre of the drum. For the small circles you usually hit with one stick, whilst the big circles you had to hit both simultaneously. E.g. for a big blue circle, you would hit both of the sides (left and right) with your sticks. The game is one of my favourite Japanese games, there's quite a few songs to choose from but it was difficult when all you could hear was DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) in the background playing Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's PonPonPon...

In conclusion, for it's money worth, I don't think it's the greatest convention to spend your money on - but that's just from my personal opinion it may be different for others...

Make sure to check out M.O.E, TobiNinjaFox and Nwanzo.
(I was working with Tobi as his assistant on the day, whilst Nwanzo was a new friend I made who is known for his convention videos).

A new experience I would have to say. I've heard about this so-called cereal bar for a very long time, yet I didn't realise how close to home it was. The cereal bar is one which offers a variety - not only do they provide us with different cereals, there are also shakes provided along with crisp sandwiches and snacks. The staff working at the place are just lovely, that's for sure. They made us feel welcome and provided us with everything we wanted. With cereals from even America, we got to mix and match as they gave us the choice to put two different types of cereal together and eat it.

We chose to have a regular bowl of cereal, I chose to have Kellogg's Krave Choco Roulette which whole milk, whilst my friend chose to mix and match with Reese's Puffs with... something else which I can't remember (Oh dear... My memory is pretty terrible) which was also accompanied by milk.

We then proceeded to try out some retro gaming. The cereal bar provides you with comfortable seating and a variety of games for you to choose from, if the games on show aren't of interest to you, you can always check out the game selection on the back tables which may have something which appeals to you. For us, we decided on playing on the Nintendo 64 and competing in Mario Kart (come on, it's truly a classic aha). We went on for a while, playing Mario Kart, at the beginning my friend continuously getting 3rd whilst I was somewhere near the end, till one of the last games where I was placing 2nd or 3rd whilst he was doing quite the opposite. Although by the end of it went downhill because I became so behind everyone that they started overtaking me on their next lap... Oh dear... But it was a great game to play - you know when you're sitting up properly to play it game that it's serious aha.

After our gaming session we decided to try another product from the cereal bar. Due to the hot weather we decided upon shakes. Whilst I went for the Malteasers Munchies, my friend went for a Kinder Bueno, Nutella. We even had a swap around of drinks to taste test, both were great but the taste of the Kinder Bueno, Nutella was much more prominent over the Malteasers Munchies.

Overall, I would have to say this is quite a chill place to be. If you happen to stop by, you should grab a drink or play a few games whilst you can. The atmosphere is peaceful and as I previously stated the staff are lovely, they welcome you with open arms. If I'm perfectly honest, I would work here if I could.

Thank you for reading, look forward to my next blog post which should be on the London Anime and Gaming Con - I realise this blog post is much shorter than others, but hey procrastination and limited time oops.

Let's just be honest... I'm incredibly unfit and I have no idea why I decided I chose to do this when I really think about it? But do I regret it? Not at all aha. It doesn't require you to be one of the fittest to be able to participate. I was one of the people who would run for a few minutes then stop and walk and go back to running, and the cycle continued. Hey! At least I wasn't alone doing so aha.

So what was involved in the Colour Obstacle Rush? Well you supposedly go through 9 colour stations and 10 obstacles. There's a wide variety of colours from pink, orange, yellow, green and blue. The obstacles consist of a variety as well, such as walking through "huge balls" (Those perverts out there, I see you aha). There was also climbing ropes as well as slides. All of which is meant to equivalent to 5k (but when looking in the distance it felt longer opps-).

At the beginning our group came together and decided to be very "unique" you could say - we wore our Colour Obstacle Rush t-shirts, and then used our other t-shirts to make ninjas masks. Walking around wearing them brought a lot of attention to others, but at least it made it easier for the rest of us to find each other if any of us had wondered off.

Before the actual startup, we had to do some preparation and warm ups. For majority of the group - even though it technically wasn't apart of the warm up, they decided to roll around on the floor and themselves covered in colour. Trust me it was a sight to remember aha. Afterwards we proceeded to dance and warm up to music following an instructor on stage. For our warm up, we danced to Ne-Yo's Closer. We then jumped into the other finishers' festivities as they threw their colour packets of powder into the air once the bass dropped. And before we even started we were quite colourful.

Well, I've just gotta say, it actually specified that we were meant to bring glasses/sunglasses but I kind of forgot... My memory is great right? But I managed to survive without and I didn't get told off for not wearing them, plus for some of the others who wore glasses they still had colour getting into their eyes - Oh dear.

So whilst the majority of the "Ai My Maid" group rushed ahead (by the way, we are the Ai My Maid group if I didn't say already opps...) there was others who were at the back. If I'm honest there was about 4-5 of us at the back. Although one of us decided to stay back because they felt bad, but in the end we told them to go off ahead and ended up being one of the first to finish in our group. Fortunately it wasn't a race and we all received a medal at the end after completing it.

The best part would have to be receiving the colour packets at the end. Some of us going back to get more, and then all at once opening our packets and throwing them up in the air and covering ourselves with extra colour - And trust me during the times we entered each colour station, we were covered, for some colours more than others. I think the person handing out the colour packets in the end realised we had taken more than we should of - they weren't very happy...
But what could we to be honest, we got a bit too addicted to using the colour packets. And the foam at the end of the slide didn't help - I remember coming back with my trainers all covered in foam and it didn't decide to come off for ages. Throughout the course of the day we managed to capture various videos on the Go Pro as well, and I think our group was one of the most memorable, with our awesome poses and unique sense of style.
Special thanks to all of the group I worked with - I wouldn't have been able to have even be allowed to enter without you guys - Let's be honest, it was a struggle needing a parent/guardian because I was under 18... Even though my birthday is only in September... Life struggles. But even so it was a great experience. Some of you may recognise one of the members of the "Ai My Maid" group as the well-known YouTuber, Annchirisu. Meeting her in real life again, even though I've met her before at a maid cafe was lovely. I know a couple of friends who seem pretty jealous of me being able to meet her aha. I also have to thank her for all the photos I've used throughout this blog post, all photo credits go to her.

And for anyone who wants to meet the "Ai My Maid" group, you can check out their Facebook page:
