As a continuation to my previous post, I felt I should make a separate post for the general city. It was my first time attending Nottingham, last Friday, and honestly I don't regret it. There were a few downers nearing the end of the day but that wasn't at all Nottingham's fault, more for the coach driver. The city honestly has a lot of things which I love, from Asian restaurants to great landscapes, good transport links as well as bubble tea places - woop woop!

After attending the Nottingham university open day, we decided on exploring the city life. We took the open day shuttle bus back to the train station and then made our way on the tram to the city centre. Previously, we decided on choosing between two Asian restaurants which were recommended by our friends, but also through research such as reviews. The two restaurants were Miss Korea and Pan Asia. From the two we decided upon Pan Asia as we felt the menu offered more variety although they were both similarly priced. We found it difficult the find Miss Korea as the use of the Google Maps was misleading. In the end, we had to ask the bubble tea worker at Chatime about its location.

Chatime is known to be one of my all time favourite bubble tea places. I usually go to the Chinatown, London located shop, to purchase my favourite drink. Fortunately at Nottingham, they also provided my all-time favourite drink, Mango QQ. With bubble tea there are various options to choose from. From milk tea drinks to fruit tea and even smoothies and more. You can also decide on different sugar levels and ice levels for your drink, and if you pay a bit extra you can also choose from different toppings e.g. Tapioca pearls - These are the most well known as these are considered the "bubbles" in bubble tea. However there is also other options such as rainbow jelly, red bean, coconut jelly and more. Chatime usually offers different sizes, for the Mango QQ, you can choose between a regular and a large drink. In Chinatown, London it is £3.25 for a regular and £3.95 for a large. Surprisingly in Nottingham, the Chatime was empty in comparison to London but it may have been the hour. Although, it was fortunate for us as we didn't have to wait long for our drink.
After drinking bubble tea, we proceeded to take a seat and enjoy the view in Nottingham. Once again, we proceeded to take various selfies - Come on, it was predicted being the Asians we are aha. And trust me, there was too many selfies taken, from using our phones to using even a DSLR. It felt like we were tourists as none of us had visited Nottingham before we captured various landscapes but also other pictures of ourselves with the view. Honestly the view was amazing!

After we had taken enough pictures of the city, we proceeded to go to Pan Asia to eat dinner. Although it was sort of early to eat dinner as it was around 4-5PM when we went to eat, it didn't mean the length of time it took us to eat wasn't going to be short. It was a great time to experiment with different cuisines as well as catch up with each other after not seeing each for a long time. Pan Asia offers a wide range of cuisines: mainly Korean and Japanese although they also offered Malaysian and other Asian starters. Whilst my cousin and my friend chose to have a taste of Korean cuisine, I opted upon choosing a Japanese cuisine (I'm quite biased when it comes to Japanese as it's my personal preference - especially as I don't really eat greens and spicy food).

I decided upon eating chicken teriyaki don, which was accompanied with cucumbers and salad, with my starter as Ika-Furai (fried squid rings or calamari). Whilst my friend and cousin optioned upon a kimchi seafood pot and a kimchi beef pot. Kimchi is a signature Korean side dish with fermented vegetables and seasoning. On the other hand, the pot itself is soup based which is accompanied with a separate bowl of rice. We also took upon trying some sushi dishes which combined various types of sushi such as: sashimi, hosomaki and nigri sushi. My favourites had to be the nigri sushi specifically the crabmeat stick or prawn. The service was great, and the atmosphere was really peaceful. Even the bathrooms were appealing. In the end, it seemed like I had eaten too much and had to takeaway my dish, but the takeaway option was really good. They provided chopsticks, as well as their own tissues in their own personalised packaging, as well as providing mints for all of us after our meal. I highly recommend this restaurant if you have a bit of money to spend. The general presentation of the restaurant as well as the cuisines itself were amazing. I highly agree with all the top rated reviews.
With the variety provided from Nottingham, the experience made me want to attend Nottingham university even more. I hope to be back soon, and hoping I will be able to receive an offer from the university so I could experience more opportunities which Nottingham can provide for me.

Nottingham, The home for the famous Robin Hood. Honestly, I've already fallen in love for this city, it has more or less everything I want... Yeah okay maybe it doesn't have an LV (honestly if I come to Nottingham, I will miss the arcade - specifically my friends, the LV community is practically my second family) but hey? We all gotta make sacrifices right?

But for the actual uni day, let's say it was quite a trek around the campus, fortunately my Media lecture was in the Great Hall located in the Trent building located in the University Park campus. I actually really like the course, there is quite a large majority being International students in my course (actually a lot of Asians to be perfectly honest aha) but that helps to get comfortable with people, since we tend to get on easier with those from similar ethnic backgrounds. I know quite a few people left during the lecture, but it may be because the Chinese lecturer was having way too much fun laughing at his jokes or talking in a long-winded manner. My friend and I couldn't help but laugh at the lecturer, because of his "fobby accent" (referring to FOB as fresh off the boat).

I think the one thing that attracted me the most, was when I read one of the modules featured "Japanese manga, Anime and Korean Wave" which happens to be a huge interest of mine. I also really liked the general course layout even if the lecturer talked about it in way too much detail aha. But along with having the opportunity to study a language from a beginner's level or from where you left off, I think it is a great way too expand your skills. There's a high possibility of me taking Mandarin Chinese if I go, as it seems to most appropriate as I will be able to use it with friends but also learn Cantonese alongside to communicate with my Cantonese-speaking relatives. As well as languages, there are opportunities to study abroad, I would most likely consider going to Japan as I really love the Japanese culture and it seems like a great opportunity to learn more about it. They are highly developed with technology and I think this would assist my Media practices at university too.

Other than listening to Media lectures, I also had the opportunity to take a tour around accommodation. Looking at the difference between self-catered accommodation and catered. For the catered accommodation there was minimal equipment in the rooms and the building itself was much older. There was a library as well as a large dining room and a common room with a TV, snooker table and table football.

Meanwhile for the self-catered accommodation, there was one which caught my attention, it was the one self-catered room which had it's own kitchen and the layout was aesthetically appealing as well. With it's own en-suite bathroom, as well as place to study and a table to eat etc. I felt it had all the necessaries I would need although I understand the risks having an installed kitchen inside the same room I sleep and work in (honestly with my non-existent cooking skills this is highly risky... Ahaha... Oh dear...) but still, there is much love for this room.

Overall, I would rate this university an 8 out of 10. This happens to be my first university open day, but the overall atmosphere is great, everyone is friendly and I think I would easily be able to get along with people at the university (well hopefully... if I don't become antisocial aha) but hey no university is perfect. I highly doubt any university will receive a 10 out of 10 from me. But for now, this is my firm choice followed by Hertfordshire as my backup.

Stay tuned for the next half of my Nottingham adventure from Friday the 26th of June ^^

Nowadays with each summer's day going by, we are fortunate enough to experience good weather, with some sunshine and breeze (especially with how unpredictable the British weather is, we are lucky if we have constant nice weather...) But what's good about having nice weather if you don't do something worthwhile with it. So my friends and I hosted a meetup at Green Park holding a picnic. The weather was cloudy but we had some sunshine, enough for us to require the need for shade.

Holding a picnic doesn't go without playing some jams from our phones with the use of a portable speaker as well as the necessity to bring food and drink. So everyone got together and contributed a variety of food, from Asian snacks and pastries to the usual picnic snacks e.g. crisps and packaged savoury snacks.

But it doesn't just stop there, it didn't mean photos weren't taken? Come on, we are a bunch of Asians, some of which owning DSLRs and all of us owning phones, there was bound to be selfies.

But it doesn't stop there, there was many attempts on freeline skates, several people competing to see who could stay on the longest on the freeline skates - trust it was terribly difficult, balance is key and practice makes perfect.

However, the day didn't end there, we still had karaoke to look forward to. For karaoke, we went to a karaoke place called Superstar which is also a restaurant located in Chinatown. The karaoke place usually requires a deposit, but we were fortunate enough to escape the deposit and even receive a discount - It's helpful when you have connections aha. You then usually receive a spending limit, and with so many of us we all only paid £20 each, which allowed us to spend time at karaoke as well as buying drinks. Although, we only found that in the last hour of karaoke that we had still a lot of money remaining to spend on drink (unfortunately, a large majority of us had gone home).

The best thing about karaoke is that you don't have to be the best singer in the world to have fun. Doing karaoke with your friends is a good way of socialising and coming together especially when you sing all together in a song you all know. For us majority of us knew One OK Rock's The Beginning, BIGBANG's Fantastic Baby and Psy's Gangnam Style (which even featured a large majority of us standing up and dancing to the song itself).

For me, I sang a large majority of Korean Pop songs, such as Ailee's Heaven, 2NE1's Lonely and SNSD's Gee. Although there wasn't just Korean songs available. One of my friend's sang Yui's Again, from the anime, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. There was also features of Chinese songs, as well as English songs such as Sia's Titanium (which happened to be my last song along with one of my friends as a duet), as well as Nicki Minaj's Super Bass. The karaoke provides us with a large variety of music to choose from, although I think it is only updated to about as late as 2013...?

Overall, I felt it was an awesome meetup - There was a lot of us and originally it was difficult to plan what to do other than doing our usual activities which includes the arcade (Las Vegas Soho Arcade). The budget per person was only about £20-£30 (excluding travel) and with a lot of content involved it was a great experience to participate with friends.

So I've been to this event consecutive times already yet I honestly found this event to be the best. Although the price increased for tickets and the queuing layout has changed throughout the years, MCM is the best when you spend with your friends or other fellow cosplayers.
For queue times, I was surprised it was faster than usual, even with a general entry it didn't take us long to enter the convention. But who would have thought that within the first few minutes of joining the queue you would end up bumping into a group of friends you knew? Just me? Oh. Well it happened, and at least it was nice to see a few familiar faces which I hadn't seen for a long time.

If I am perfectly honest, I'm not exactly one of the typical buyers at MCM. I was totally there for the £2.99 offer of pocky provided by Art Box. The 4 flavours they offered was: chocolate, chocobanana, strawberry and milk - Yeah... Anyways enough about pocky, I was fortunate enough to even discover this one time deal at MCM. That life struggle when you wait awkwardly to receive your 1p change from the seller, and he stands their giving you looks (thankfully I was with my friend phew, or this would be have been much more awkward...) but we did receive our change eventually...

But other than pocky, we also purchased takoyaki. If you haven't tried it, I honestly recommend it. It's literally octopus balls, which doesn't sound that all appealing but trust me it tastes so good. It's known to be a typical Japanese street food. But it is also great for sharing with friends and family if you want small bites to eat. I honestly only spent money on food... Which I have no regrets for...

After the purchases of food, we went off to watch the the League of Legends tournament in the Esports section. I think we were fortunate to receive a free skin for the game. After inputting our details we retrieved the Riot Kayle skin (which apparently isn't available anymore to purchase?) but we made our way to our seats for UK Premiership finals. However, the finals went surprisingly quick, and already there was an obvious winner.

But what probably made my day with MCM was having the opportunity to have a meet up with all of my close friends. Although it was merely a game of trying to find everyone in a massive convention - meaning using the specials skills of being a short person and swerving through crowds (trust me it was eventful). But in the end, we found a good spot on the green to all chill and listen to tunes that were currently being played out in the open. The great thing about MCM is that everyone is really comfortable with each other, although dressing in cosplay tends to make the experience a lot more interesting. For my friend and I we decided to dress up in a kimono and a maid costume, whilst another one of my friends who I stumbled across dressed up as Asuna from Sword Art Online.

But it didn't mean the boys in our group didn't get involved too in becoming "kawaii" is what they say in Japanese. Otherwise known as "cute". One of my friends is wearing a butler cosplay on the left along with a bow headband (borrowed from his girlfriend - they had matching cosplays it was super cute), whilst my other friend on the right, has been customised with cat whiskers using eyeliner and hello kitty style cat ears. I would definitely rate them an 11/10 in cuteness (just joking... Or am I really?) What would you rate these guys out of cuteness aha?

For those who don't know what cosplay is? Cosplay is a form of costume dress up usually of a fictional character e.g. from League of Legends, One Piece etc. For cosplayers, they take their time to make their costumes out of scratch including props, whilst others may take the option to buy their cosplayers which can be much quicker but may be more expensive.

Although for me, I chose to meet up with friends, there are many cosplayers who choose to attend specific meetups for their types of cosplays. At the convention I saw a Bleach cosplay meetup being held by one of the entrances and an Attack on Titan cosplay meetup by the green. This is a great way of socialising with new people, also with such a large group it is considerably safe especially as it is in held in such a well-known public place.

Overall, I found the event to be enjoyable with various events being held such as stage performances of several familiar acts as well as recognising familiar face. You don't even have to buy a ticket to have fun. I know many people who had a good time without a ticket, but buying a ticket allows you to have many opportunities available inside especially with some awesome purchases. If you're one looking for a haul of goods particularly related to anime, games or comics, I would recommend you buying a ticket, otherwise being outside is fun as well (as long as it doesn't rain, knowing the unpredictable British weather...) you don't miss out on too much in my personal opinion. If you are looking to attend MCM expo in London, the events tend to be held every May and October - I suggest you buy your tickets online in advance as it may or may not be possible to buy it on the day.
